3425: TEACHING WRITING

The course INGL-3425-M91, was an opening of new understandings. On this class I had to do five hours of observation, which they were educational and overall an amazing experience. Prof. Morgan imparted her knowledge on us and I can affirm I am taking all of it with me.

3231 : ADVANCED EXPOSITORY WRITTING I

The reason I choose to research the topic of the halo effect it’s because in my workplace, I notice the positive reaction to the new interns who are attractive people, in comparison to the previous who were less attractive. I notice the sudden change in my co-worker’s behavior towards them, as read in one of the articles on the topic, even if they didn’t give a big contribution to a problem they were praised and thanked for. However, as the time passed my co-workers started to see the flaws in the interns and they started to call out their errors.

Their behavior created a curiosity  in me and I started to search what does it means to act in such way. Then it came to me in big black letter "Halo Effect", I started to read and read about this effect and the more obsessed I was. Therefore I choose the halo effect as my topic of research.

3227: PHONETICS AND PHONEMICS OF AMERICAN ENGLISH

Preparing the class that we as a group we were to teach, was exiting and nerve wrecking at the same time. I had to teach a sound to a class and if I didn't know well the sound, then how will the students understand and learn the sound. We search for information of the sound and created a draft on how we will teach it. After we got the hang of it, we were prepare to teach. I think giving a class project is a good idea for future teachers to practice and win over the nerves of teaching. From this experience, I will be taking with me the patience of playing a word bingo and noticing how naturally teaching comes to me.

3205:  GRAMMATICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MODERN ENGLISH

For this course, our main big project was to present a form of grammar and explain it to the class and make it a class to be taught in school. I was happy when I got assign pronouns, is such an easy topic and at the time a very hot topic. It was fun creating this presentation, to which I used a lot of color and graphics to be more eye catching. When presented, the feedback was good and people also liked the presentation. I am very proud of my search and gathering of information on the pronouns, to which I think covers every important data from it. It was informative for them, swell for me.

4205: THE STUDY OF LANGUAGE: INTRODUCTION TO LINGUISTICS

I learn a lot of this activity, researching for the topic of language and research paper, and finding out about a research that was done to investigate how genders speak. I found exceptional that the findings of this investigation lead to the conclusion that how people should act based on their gender, is all comes from a society construct. Learning about linguistics this semester was educational and I am really glad that this class is important for my bachelor. I learn so many in this class that for sure will later be using it in classes and most importantly will used to guide myself to teach and become a good teacher. This this project will shape my future teaching because as a bilingual speaker and searching the topic that I choose, I felt identify in various aspects of the subjects I expose in my research paper. Those factors being gender and race. All my life I have been speaking on how women are permitted less to speak, after being faced with true evidence that these events happen and are still happening, I will love to advocate more to women, as the feminist that I am. In race, how me as a bilingual person, with English as my second language, I hold my identity close to my heart. When living in United States I expressed my identity as a Puerto Rican even though I was not speaking Spanish. The things I will have done different is not putting my own experience in my research paper, as I saw that not necessary but as I am giving it some thoughts, I could have put on the research the how language and identity is tied to the Puerto Rican culture.

4327: LITERATURE FOR ADOLESCENTS

The course of Young Adult Literature introduced me to a new world of books I thoughts I wouldn’t like, realistic fiction. I was given the opportunity to choose a book for my book talk and I chose Forever by Judy Blume, without even reading the description and thinking it was vampire or immortal book. When I started to search the book and read parts of it, I noticed that the theme of the book wasn’t supernatural, but the genre was realistic fiction. At first, I was encouraged because I don’t like realistic fiction, but I already chose the book, and it was to late to change my decision. However, when I started to read more and more about the book, I became obsessed with it. It was the type of book a young me in middle school and high school needed.

I chose to portray this work because of the dedication and research I put onto it. The strengths will be that I’m fully emerged in the knowledge of the topic of the book talk and it’s a great book to teach to young adults, especially when they can relate so much to the characters of the book. I will say that a weakness is that I haven’t read the whole book, I have read chapters and pieces. If I were to read the book and developed a lesson plan, the class be will be weakness-proof and overall a knowledgeable and interesting class.
